It’s happened to the best of us, you turn on the water in your sink, shower, or tub and instead of flowing down the drain, it begins to back up. Your first thought will be to reach for that household liquid drain cleaner to get the job done quickly. What you might not know if that liquid drain cleaner may be doing more harm than good. Not just to you, but to your drains as well! Fear not, Mr Swirl is here to help get those stubborn clogs gone and your drains working smoothly again!
Household Drain Cleaners
Drain cleaners rely on powerful chemicals, such as lye, peroxide or bleach. Because of their high toxicity levels, they are hazardous – and potentially fatal – if inhaled or swallowed. They will also cause serious burns if allowed contact with the skin. These harsh chemicals are meant to eat away at whatever is inside your pipes, however they can’t distinguish what it good and what is bad so they end up eating away at everything, including your pipes! That’s why Mr Swirl technicians travel with our own all natural drain cleaner. It’s all natural, environmentally safe and works effectively without all those nasty chemicals!
DIY Drain Cleaner
A simple recipe made with products you most likely already have on hand can be an effective drain cleaner! Try mixing baking soda and white vinegar this mixture helps remove blockages of all kinds from your bathroom and kitchen drains. The acidic properties in the vinegar loosen food residue and other clog-causing debris, and form an even more powerful cleaning agent when combined with baking soda. The bubbling reaction created by mixing the two ingredients together can dislodge most blockages on its own, but you may need to use an auger, or snake, for more stubborn clogs like hair.
Always avoid putting grease, fat, oil, eggshells, pasta, rice, potatoes, bones, stringy foods, coffee grounds, hair, feminine products, paper towels and “flushable” wipes down the drain. As always, if you’ve got a stubborn clog, give Mr Swirl a ring!
